ART/new york, a video series on contemporary art, was begun in 1979 by Paul Tschinkel, founder and executive producer. This unique and extensive series focuses on the visual arts and brings art, artists and exhibitions to a broad public interested in the major developments on the New York art scene. Over the last 30 years, ART/new york has covered major exhibitions and artists who have defined and shaped the diverse and exciting directions in contemporary art. Each program features visits to galleries, museums, artist's studios and includes revealing interviews with artists as well as the perspective views of critics, curators and dealers.
PAUL TSCHINKEL's INNER-TUBE was a NYC Cable program that also featured music from NYC clubs like CBGBs, Max's Kansas City, The Mudd Club and more. It predated and was imitated by MTV. Seen on this weekly program, which ran from 1979 to 1984, were emerging bands that defined and celebrated a generation of music makers and music lovers.

Wow the disrespect!
JMB is the father of us all.
If Basquiat is self taught, then I’m a giraffe!
Walter is the best
He’s so funny and honest
Oi ❤❤❤
Genuis!

I can only imagine how he grew up. As a Haitian, I came from a home where freedom of expression was not encouraged. I had to be home at 11 pm at the age of 20. However, the home he came from was also the reason for his artistry. Haitian parents encourage education & being cultured. We can see his brilliance & culture in his work. Bon travail Monsieur Basquiat
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
He was so handsome. Kinda favors kid Cudi
I thought Warhol was more of an artist than J-M. I don’t get him at all.
Doesn't anyone think that Basquiat might have been a high functioning autistic person? Some of his quirks and mannerisms make me think he might have been but back then we didn't have a name for autism. I have a nephew that is autistic and he's very smart and creative.
Not just Johnny, all of them are high as F;!
Ironic photo
Thanks
Reminds me of the martial artist Nick Diaz
You can tell he’s trying his hardest to not to be rude or impolite. I like how he carries himself despite his inner struggles and frustrations.
Omg he's so cute! The girls must've loved him (I don't wanna be disrespectful. It's just how I feel)
What a talent
sie war sehr hubsch aussehen aah... 25:17 42:58
Is that Kid Cudi's daddy?
Alot of his interviews go this way Their clearly trying to placate him to his face while totaly ignoring the Art 🎨
When you put an idiot in the same room with a genius..
Brilliant interview w/ brilliant answers.
I loved seeing this I wish it was longer.
Who the name of the girl at 10:05 ?
Perhaps you should listen to the BG's or some mellow middle of the road music and not to the Stones or Ray Charles, etc. Music is for the heart and soul and not just for the ears. Honesty is a fact, Music is poetry, no matter how distorted. Look for the message not just the right cord. The business about drugs is bullshit. See the movie on Vimeo. Amen
Can we just be honest? Johnny can't sing. His guitar is literally never in tune, I can't find one live performance on YT that doesn't sound like shit. I understand his significance in the development of the punk genre, and I'm sure there is some base talent there, but the drugs just destroyed this man. His live performance suffered to the point that it's borderline unlistenable.
2024 August. Can’t stop watching this. Every time I drink glass of whiskey I put this masterpiece on loud
1:38 This dude is every cool high school teacher I ever had
Am I the only one who gets an MJ vibe from basquiat? (I’m talking about prior to the 50+ surgeries).
One of the better interviews, I would say. It’s hard to find a good Basqiuat interview where the interviewer isn’t racist or annoying. Although there definitely is a disconnect(which there will almost always be between a genius like Basquiat), he’s much more talkative and seems happy in this discussion.
real as fuck based as fuck comment thank u
Always been a fan, saw him play but had no idea he stooped to this level of disrespect towards the Cross of Jesus Christ. Sad. Even sadder that madonna ripped him off. She was around a lot in those days before hitting it big. This video really disturbs me. Oh well.
Well done tinkle
RANT RICHARD RANT
The interviewer is slow. Just slow.

Thank you so much Paul for editing and posting this. And thank you forever for all that work you did back then hauling your video camera-recorder around. I remember the effort you put in. And we are all the lucky beneficiaries of your hard work. Inner Tube was truly an epic public access show. You presented too many important performances to possibly list here. Fans and music historians will be viewing these videos in the future for more years than we can imagine. You've made a wonderful contribution to the history of art and rock and roll and rock and roll as art! - Mark S....Revelons

cool .still waiting for knots!!!

He was the nicest guy I ever met in music circles. As real-deal as it gets. ♥
Ahh…my misspent youth. Thanks Paul!
The Revelons were good! I never heard their music before, and only knew their name because years later Syd Straw wrote a distinctive song called CBGB's about one of the band members who was also a bartender there. I guess she had liked him and regretted not having pursued him.
The Inner Tube opened my World on to what was going on downtown. I grew up on 72nd street and watching your show was nothing short of a revelation. Thank you Paul.
Thank you Paul…
We have the same birthday 🥹🥹🥹 just born a different year !! 12/22 ♑️
Thanks!!!!❤
He is on the spectrum .. too smart for his own good he see the world in a 3d . Like tupac said staring at the world from rare view 🤯🤯🤯😍😍🫡😇
